Will 7 Peaks Festival Be Broadcast Again

It was recently announced that ground-breaking '90s drama Twin Peaks is being brought back from the dead, with a new season scheduled for 2016 on Showtime.

David Lynch and Mark Frost's classic whodunit will have been off-air for an astonishing 25 years by then, but which other TV shows were cancelled mid-flow, only to be revived in the future? And how long did fans have to wait for their prayers to be answered by the TV Gods?

Note: We're not talking remakes with a new cast - unless that's permissible given the concept - but rather TV shows allowed to resume, with members of the original cast involved.

Futurama - 4 years

Why did it end? Futurama was Matt Groening's geekier follow-up to The Simpsons, about a pizza delivery boy cryogenically frozen on New Year's Eve 1999 and defrosted a thousand years later. The animation was slicker and it was funnier than late-'90s Simpsons, but viewership wasn't huge and Fox simply didn't request more after four seasons.

What happened next? Comedy Central started airing popular repeats, and the mainstreaming of geek culture in the mid-'00s kept Futurama alive in people's hearts.

How was it revived? Thrilled by the success of their repeat, Comedy Central financed four direct-to-DVD movies in 2007. Those proved so successful that a complete revival was a no-brainer. Futurama lasted another three seasons at its new home, before again being axed in 2013. Fans have their fingers crossed for a second revival.

Lifespans: 1999-2003 then 2007-13.

24 - 4 years

Why did it end? A huge success for Fox, real-time action thriller 24 began to show signs of creative fatigue with a lacklustre sixth season. Season 7 and 8 were improvements, but still a pale imitation of the anti-terrorism in its prime, so Fox stopped the clock in 2010.

What happened next? The expectation was to let 24 segue from television to movies - with Training Day's Antoine Fuqua attached to direct - but it never gained traction amidst concerns of making the real-time format work for a two-hour movie, and audience hunger dimmed.

How was it revived? As plans for a feature wilted on the vine, producer Howard Gordon suggested a limited-run 'event series' to Fox in 2013, and they jumped at the idea in the wake of a general downturn in TV ratings since 24 was axed. Key members of the show's cast and crew committed to the twelve-hour 24: Live Another Day, which is set in the UK and premiered in 2014.

Lifespans: 2001-10 and 2014.

Arrested Development - 7 years

Why did it end? Despite becoming a critical favourite with a passionate fan-base who can quote lines on demand, Arrested Development never appealed to the masses. It was too avant-garde and serialised to take root, although its awards successes ensured a three-season run before Fox couldn't justify keeping it on-air.

What happened next? The final episode teased the development of a Ron Howard-directed movie, so fans spent years excitedly pestering the cast about the status of this project.

How was it revived? The Bluths never made it to multiplexes, but Netflix saw how popular the show remained on its service and offered to bankroll a fourth season. Netflix released the entirety of its fourth season in 2013, although the long-awaited return proved divisive because of its unusual production and release strategy (episodes available simultaneously, each instalment spotlighting a different character, unequal running times). Regardless, Netflix is said to be planning more when everyone's available again.

Lifespans: 2003-06 and 2013-present.

Red Dwarf - 10 years

Why did it end? This is a head-scratcher, because BBC Two simply chose not to commission more episodes, despite Red Dwarf pulling in a staggering 8 million viewers during its eighth series. For some, however, cancellation felt like a mercy killing for a show that had undergone huge creative changes post-Series 6, when co-creator Rob Grant parted ways with the project.

What happened next? Like so many dead shows, fans were hoping for a movie. A script was written and production was due to begin in 2005 (split between the UK and Australia), but co-creator Doug Naylor failed to secure the necessary £11m and the project fell apart.

How was it revived? Digital channel Dave began airing repeats of Red Dwarf in 2008, which were so popular they decided to finance a three-part special for Easter 2009. Despite 'Back to Earth' receiving a critical drubbing, Dave were so pleased with the record-breaking ratings that a full six-part series debuted to increased acclaim in 2012.

Lifespans: 1988-1999 and 2009-present.

Star Trek - 10 years

Why did it end? It was simply down to numbers. Star Trek was never a big hit for NBC, who cancelled it after a reasonable three-year run.

What happened next? Unexpectedly, syndicated repeats became very popular in the 1970s (earning Paramount $1 million per episode), and the show lingered in the public consciousness - helped by an animated series broadcast between 1973-74. Fans, naming themselves 'Trekkies', also began the now widespread practice of attending conventions to show their appreciation.

How was it revived? Incredibly, the common dream of a cancelled TV series being revived as an expensive Hollywood movie actually came true! Jealous of the success of Star Wars in 1977, Paramount decided to capitalise on the enduring popularity of Star Trek by greenlighting a $46m movie (then the most expensive movie ever made). Despite a mixed reaction, it was nevertheless the catalyst for numerous sequels and spinoffs, not to mention a cinematic reboot.

Lifespans: 1966-69 and 1979-1991 (movies).

Doctor Who - 16 years

Collar, Dress shirt, Blazer, Jacket, Button, Pocket, Top, Cuff, Pleased, Overcoat,

Why did it end? The BBC's sci-fi drama was an instant hit in the '60s and had become a cultural touchstone by the '70s, so its cancellation in the late-'80s still seems harsh. But mainstream viewers had grown weary of the programme, which looked increasingly cheap compared to flashier US imports like Star Trek: The Next Generation. After moving to a bad timeslot in 1989, production was suspended and the BBC later announced the Doctor would not return.

What happened next? There was an immediate attempt to revive the show with US money, driven by British ex-pat Philip Segal, who later managed to shepherd a 1996 television movie into existence on Fox. This 'backdoor pilot' wasn't a hit in America, so hopes of a full return were dashed. In the meantime, fans had to contend themselves with licensed novels and audio plays…

How was it revived? BBC Worldwide tried to get a big-budget movie made during much of late-'90s (Steven Spielberg's name even came up), until thought turned to reviving Doctor Who as a TV series in 2003. Russell T Davies was chosen as the head writer for a BBC Cymru Wales production that debuted in 2005. The show again become an immediate hit for a whole new generation of families, and is now a major global entertainment brand.

Lifespans: 1963-1989 and 2005-present.

Dallas - 21 years

Table, Hat, Interior design, Coat, Dress shirt, Suit, Interior design, Curtain, Conversation, Sun hat,

TNT

Why did it end? Debuting in 1978, Dallas became one of the most iconic soap operas of the 1980s with its tales of a cutthroat Texan oil family, led by patriarch JR Ewing. However, it was very much of a product of its time and audiences had fallen out of love by the early-'90s. It didn't help that the writers infamously retconned the death of a major character, thus turning one year into a "dream season".

What happened next? The show's 357 episodes kept it alive in syndication Stateside, and there were even two made-for-TV reunion films to tide fans over in the late-'90s.

How was it revived? Rumours of a big-screen return floated around the internet for many years at the turn-of-the-millennium, with John Travolta tipped to play JR Ewing. After the success of 2004's Starsky & Hutch, the idea of tweaking it into a tongue-in-cheek comedy was even mentioned. However, it was cabler TNT who decided to produce a direct continuation of the original for 2012, focusing on the next generation of Ewings, but with the "holy trinity" of Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray involved. The first season was received well, but audiences seemed to lose interest after Hagman sadly died and the writers bid farewell to JR. The third season was less successful and TNT announced its cancellation in 2014.

Lifespans: 1978-1991 and 2012-14.

Twin Peaks - 25 years

Why did it end? Bad decision-making. Despite having a reputation for being one of the weirdest TV shows ever made, Twin Peaks was an instant hit for ABC when it launched in 1990. Unfortunately, viewing figures for the second season were soft, so the network ordered creators David Lynch and Mark Frost to reveal the killer by mid-season. They obliged, but this only caused ratings to drop further once the primary mystery had been solved and the story lost focus. Frost and Lynch wrote a crazy final scene in a desperate bid to earn themselves a third season, but it instead served as a memorably frustrating conclusion. Or did it?

What happened next? David Lynch was already an established film director when Twin Peaks debuted, so it didn't surprise many people when he created a prequel/sequel called Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me in 1992. Sadly, it was booed at the Cannes Film Festival and only grossed $4.1m at the US box-office.

How was it revived? Twin Peaks lay dormant after Fire Walk With Me's dismal reception, and even Lynch's output as a director waned in the intervening years. However, the show has never been forgotten in pop culture, and hopes for a return were finally answered this year by Showtime - who agreed to finance a nine-part revival for 2016. Spookily, that's the year Laura Palmer's ghost prophesied she'd see FBI Agent Dale Cooper once again…

Lifespans: 1990-91 and 2016.
